Alan Powell has been awarded the SHARE Museums East Silver Owl Award for more than 25 years of volunteering with Martlesham Heath Aviation Society. In early July, he was presented with his Certificate and Badge by the Society’s Vice-President Vicky Gunnell. Alan was surprised to be recognised but also very pleased.
Howard King gives us a thrilling guide to what visitors will find when they visit the museum:
“On a visit to the Martlesham Heath Control Tower Museum, try to find the picture of a Flying Coyote…where is the Anderson’s Gazunder? And what about a photo of the Westland Pterodactyl…We even have a picture of a Flying Boat giving a piggy-back to another smaller plane!”

“Our World War II vintage museum is chock full of tales of aircraft, and airmen and derring-do from the days of fabric and wooden flying machines to the Jet age – testing hundreds of aircraft (civil and military, between the wars and fighting off enemy aircraft (German AND Italian) in World War II, and then going on the offensive with our American Allies.”
“Then, after the war’s end, going back to aircraft and aviation research and development, working in areas such as Blind Landing and Rough Field Trials!”
“For a fascinating two and a half hours, come along on a Sunday afternoon from 2pm-4.30pm until the last Sunday in October, and meet our enthusiastic team – who will make you welcome and can answer all your questions…”
