As part of a £1.2 million restoration project, the Long Shop Museum is undertaking a decant of the objects on display in the upper-storey Gallery of the Long Shop. Over nine hundred objects, ranging from thimbles to horse-drawn seed drills, will be examined, recorded, packaged, lowered to ground level, and temporarily stored while the building work takes place.
Some of the objects will not be returned to display, as the Gallery’s exhibits will also be refreshed as part of this project, and will instead find new homes in our stores. So that these objects continue to benefit from the best care the museum can provide, and to make the most of valuable storage space, new archive grade stackable storage boxes are being purchased. These containers are being bought with a generous grant from the Association for Suffolk Museums, for which the Museum is most grateful.
The first phase of the refurbishment will be complete in March 2024, and the refurbished Long Shop Gallery will open, along with the rest of the museum, on 24th March with our Steam Up! event.
