Over August 2024, the Red House took part in the Suffolk Holiday Activity and Food Programme by offering a week of engaging activities and food for 13–16-year-olds.
The Science of Sound week allowed us to dive into the fascinating world of sound exploration with hands-on workshops designed for 13-16 year olds incorporating science, heritage and music.
We were lucky enough to work with Frazer Merrick from CLIP Sound and Music https://www.clipsoundandmusic.uk/ who introduced the young people to a range of exciting scientific and musical activities. We saw 11 young people join us for the whole week.
As part of the week all the young people worked to complete Arts Award Bronze qualification, through exploring the Red House site and working together to create a group exhibition at the end of the week.
Other activities included, exploring nature and The Red House gardens to create cyanotype t-shirt designs, developing laser music viewers and working with CLIP to dissect old keyboards, explore circuit bending and experimenting with light and sound with the Photon Smasher.
The young people also learnt skills as a DIY DJ’s, exploring experimental turntablism by crafting beats and remixing tunes with cut-up records. The week was an unforgettable journey into audio experimentation for all of the young people involved.
The group also worked together to develop a team exhibition of their work which was open to visitors and family members at the end of the week. The exhibition was well received, and the young people managed the space, explaining to members of the public about their week and activities.
We are delighted that all of the young people have successfully passed their Arts Award Bronze qualification, which is GCSE level equivalent, and 6 of the young people are wanting to continue their journey with us to by completing an Arts Award Silver level. We will present their certificates at a special celebration event at Snape Maltings later in the year.
Exciting news – building on our success last year in gaining a Sandford Award for Heritage Education for our taught school programme, the Red House, Aldeburgh been shortlisted as a Finalist for the 2024 School Travel Awards ‘Best School Trip’ award.
We were nominated by Stoke by Nayland Primary School, who took part in our new Art Award in a Day session at Snape Maltings. The children participated in a range of collection, artistic, musical and songwriting activities- all which helped them achieve an Arts Award qualification at the end of the day.
