Join us this autumn at Gainsborough’s House

Posted on 24th October 2023

If you’re looking for ways to keep warm, dry and thoroughly entertained this season; look no further — we are more than just a House in Sudbury, Suffolk.

Our salacious exhibition of James Gillray: Characters in Caricature will be a lively and daring examination of how Gillray exposed the most notorious scandals of his time by focusing on the artist’s principal characters.

The Director of Gainsborough’s House, Dr Steven Parissien, says: “We are delighted to stage this outstanding and unprecedented exhibition of the works of one of the most talented and incisive satirists Britain has ever seen. The individuals whom Gillray so adeptly skewered may be dead, but the themes of political duplicity and moral laxity he identifies are as relevant today as they were in Gillray’s time.”

If eighteenth-century cartoonists aren’t really your cup of tea, you might prefer the contemplative and contemporary art of Rebecca Salter!

As the first woman president of the Royal Academy, we are thrilled that her first solo exhibition will be held here at Gainsborough’s House. Rooted in Japanese modes of thought and art making, In View: Rebecca Salter at Gainsborough’s House, uses themes of Drawing to Painting, Repetition and Attention, Surface and Depth to provide entry points into Salter’s careful, meditative mode of abstraction. This will be an immersive exhibition in the Sudbury Gallery, Mulberry Room and David Pike Drawings Gallery in the historic House.

Our upcoming exhibitions both commence on Saturday 11 November 2023 and will run until Sunday 10 March 2024. For the most up-to-date details for exhibitions and events, please check our website: https://gainsborough.org/whats-on/
