Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum opens its gates for 2024

When: February 17, 2024 Time: 10am to 4pm Venue: Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum opens its gates for 2024 Address: Cost: Free to enter - and no charge for parking either. Suitable for: Everybody welcome. Event category: Days Out ,Families

After another busy close season, the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum is pleased to be able to throw open the doors for the first time in 2024 and welcome visitors in to see what we’ve been up to during the storms and rain of the winter.

Whilst the land around us has been flooded, whilst temperatures have dipped well below freezing and while scarves, gloves and very thick fleeces have been the fashion of the winter – the Volunteers have embarked on an ambitious set of Winter Projects. Come and see for yourself what we’ve been up to on Saturday the 17th of February!

Since we closed at the end of 2023, we have welcomed a new arrival in the shape of our Chipmunk fuselage project (nestling in the workshop but soon to become a Flight Simulator), a complete refurbishment of the ROC building and its content (although this will be opening towards the end of March), a full audit of the Bomber Command museum where we found a few things we didn’t know that we had and a thorough clean up around the Museum. For those of you who haven’t visited since early in 2023 you’ll also find that several of the outdoor aircraft – the Hunter and Valetta particularly, are sporting new paintwork and are looking very trim!

Pay us a visit and play spot the difference – you’ll be surprised what a team of Volunteers can do in a few short weeks!

The Museum site will be fully open, as usual, every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday throughout the season from 10am through to 4pm each day, with all the aircraft, cockpits and equipment displays, the 446th, Air Sea Rescue and Bomber Command (not the ROC on this occasion) buildings all open and Museum Volunteers on hand to explain the thousands of aviation related items that make up the Museum Collection.

Thankfully, the NAAFI cafe will be open for the serious business of warming you up with a cup of tea (or coffee) and cake, and the shop will be offering its usual wide range of aviation related goodies to help you make the most of your day. If you really want to go to town on lunch then why not try the Buck Inn situated just outside the Museum gates – give them a ring on 01986 896883 and book your table!

Entrance to the Museum, and parking when you arrive, are all free – but we would really appreciate a donation to help with the never ending maintenance of all the exhibits and to help us keep the Museum growing.

We have aeroplanes on display that date from before the war through to the Canberras, Lightnings, Hunters and Harriers that have seen service in the RAF in more recent times. Across the whole site we have more than 60 aircraft and cockpit sections on display and can often offer access into many of them for photo opportunities. Museum Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and point out some of the features of each aircraft.

Well behaved dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a lead (but not in the shop please, it gets a bit narrow). We are wheelchair friendly with access to all areas – apart from aircraft cockpits.
We look forward to seeing you there…!
