Minis and Mini Models Day at NASAM
The Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum is pleased to be able to hold a miniature day – where all of our exhibitors are mini!
The bigger Minis are the collection of well restored and loved examples of Sir Alec Issigonis’ best known creation courtesy of the Bury Mini Club – and the smaller Minis are the wonderful 1:72 scale models that make up the recreation of the 2005 flight line at the Duxford based Flying Legends air show. The 16th of June is the date you need to put into your diaries.
Based in historic Bury St Edmunds, the Bury Mini Club are an active collection of Mini enthusiasts who like to use their cars to go places and do things if their events list for 2024 is anything to go by. We are expecting about 12 examples, and their owners, to join us for the day and expect to have no trouble at all parking them under the various aircraft we have on display outdoors. More information about the Club can be found at https://www.buryminiclub.co.uk/
The Tiny Flying Legends modelling team (find them at https://www.tinyflyinglegends.com/) have worked – in their own words – to bring the grandeur of the 2005 Duxford Flying Legends Airshow to life – but in 1:72 scale model form. Their full model replicates the flight line, the buildings and the 90 or so aircraft that made up the show that day – and stretches to about 20m in length. Tiny motors, speakers and animated ground vehicles add dynamics to the display to blend history, artistry and technology into one unique display. We can’t guarantee getting the full 20m version though – it depends on how big their van is!
The Museum site will be fully open as usual from 10am through to 4pm on the day, with all the aircraft, cockpits and equipment displays, the Bomber Command, 446th Bomb Group, Air Sea Rescue and ROC buildings all open and Museum Volunteers on hand to explain the many thousands of aviation related items that make up the Museum Collection.
The NAAFI cafe will be open for the serious business of tea (or coffee) and cake, and the shop will be offering a wide range of aviation related goodies to help you make the most of your day. If you really want to go to town on lunch then why not try the Buck Inn situated just outside the Museum gates – give them a ring on 01986 896883 and book your table!
Entrance to the Museum, and parking when you arrive, are all free – but we would really appreciate a donation to help with the never ending maintenance of all the exhibits and to help us keep the Museum growing.
We have aeroplanes on display that date from before the war through to the Canberras, Lightnings, Hunters and Harriers that have seen service in the RAF in more recent times. Across the whole site we have more than 60 aircraft and cockpit sections on display and can often offer access into many of them for photo opportunities. Museum Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and point out some of the features of each aircraft.
Well behaved dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a lead (but not in the shop please, it gets a bit narrow). We are wheelchair friendly with access to all areas – apart from aircraft cockpits.
We look forward to seeing you there…!
