Love & War in Suffolk
Bury St Edmunds Guildhall is hosting the free exhibition ‘Love & War in Suffolk’.
The exhibition will explore the impact that the war had on romantic relationships in Suffolk, with its unique position being so close to Europe. This resulted in an influx of service personnel from many allied countries, exposing local population to groups of people they might never ordinarily have met. Alongside the pressures of wartime conditions, and separated from loved ones, unique bonds were formed. Some of these bonds were enduring, others were fleeting, but each leaving behind a legacy that feeds into Suffolk’s rich history.
The narrative of the exhibition will be informed by local stories and presented using personal objects, testimonies, photographs, love letter and diaries, exploring how conflict can bring about unexpected ties or abruptly sever existing bonds, and will include stories of enduring love, loss and separation, fleeting affairs, and romances beyond convention.
Open Saturday 1 April – Sunday 16 April, excluding Friday 7 April – Monday 10 April.
