21st March – 11th April 2026
East Anglian Traditional Art Centre, Wickham Market, near Woodbridge, IP13 0QS
2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Constable, Suffolk’s most famous landscape painter. He achieved a world-wide reputation through his pictures of the English countryside, especially of the Stour Valley between Essex and Suffolk. This exhibition features original drawings and watercolours by John Constable, together with works by his family members and artists associated with him.
The Exhibition covers various periods of Constable’s life and artistic development, beginning with his early watercolour of Great Yarmouth of c.1796, through to a pencil sketch of the Coronation in 1831. George Frost of Ipswich, is known to have painted alongside Constable and is well represented, including a view of Ipswich docks painted about the time he was working with Constable.
The ‘English Landscape’ series of 22 mezzotint prints is represented, including a signed 1832 presentation set given to the artist Copley Fielding
Many of the pictures on display are on loan, but the Exhibition offers for sale a rare group of drawings by Constable’s family members, including his son Lionel, his grandson Hugh Constable and his great-great grandson Richard. Other works for sale are by George Frost and other traditional Suffolk artists.
Timed to coincide with the John Constable 250th Anniversary events being held nationally (and locally at Christchurch Mansion Art Gallery in Ipswich) this interesting small exhibition aims to expand the knowledge of the artist and his family, whilst also giving an insight into some of the later Suffolk artists who followed in his footsteps.
Opening times Tuesday to Saturday. 11am – 4 pm. Other times by arrangement.
