Heritage Open Days: The Red House

When: September 17, 2026 to September 20, 2026 Time: 10:30 am to 04:30 pm Cost: Free, but please book Event category: Talks and Tours

Venue: The Red House, Aldeburgh

An annual nationwide celebration of living heritage at The Red House and Archive, our theme for this year is 300 Years of Everyday Life.

Long before it became a home for artists, The Red House was a massive 1000-acre coastal farm. This Heritage Open Day, explore its deep agricultural roots from an 18th-century powerhouse to a 1912 Dairy School. Discover how children from less fortunate backgrounds learned the dairy trade right here. Join us for live history talks, a family detective trail, archival photo displays, and a hands-on milking challenge!

  • The Archive Exhibition: Head to the gallery to see rare photographs and original documents tracking The Red House from its 17th-century roots to its busy farming days.
  • Scheduled Talks (The Red House Farm): Join our local historians for a deep dive into the lives of the farmers and dairy maids who kept this site running for 300 years. (Check the chalkboard for times).
  • Handling Sessions (Life on the Farm): Get hands-on with history! Touch and explore tools from our early 20th-century farming collection.
  • The Dairy School Challenge: Think you’ve got what it takes? Learn the “Trap, Squeeze, Release” technique at our interactive milking station!
  • Leave your Mark Graffiti workshop.
