DNA – facts and fantasy
Venue: Halesworth United Reformed Church, Quay Street, Halesworth IP19 8EP
Personal DNA testing kits are all the rage. They are widely advertised in newspapers, magazines, and on both radio and television. But are we being sold a pup? This highly topical question will be addressed by local archaeologist Kevin Wooldridge MA, MCIfA on Thursday 23 July in the latest talk presented by Halesworth & District Museum.
Kevin will explore the claims made in media, academia and family history based on the use of DNA evidence, highlighting past events, past populations and even long-dead individuals, from ancient cave dwellers to kings buried in carparks. He will consider what we do know for sure about DNA, our communal history and personal pasts, and reveal what amounts to hype.
In a fascinating illustration to his talk, Kevin will also recount his own personal journey through DNA testing. And he says: ‘That is an experience that led me to doubt who I thought I was!’
Kevin’s talk, Ancient DNA – What Does It Tell Us About History, Archaeology or Anything Else?, takes place at Halesworth United Reformed Church, Quay Street, Halesworth IP19 8EP. It starts at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm), and admission costs £8.00, or £4.00 for Museum Friends. Pay at the door, no need to book.
