Annual Farrier Competition

When: August 12, 2023 Time: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Venue: National Horseracing Museum Address: 2 Palace St, Newmarket CB8 8EP, UK Cost: Adults £15 including admission to Museum, under 16's free Suitable for: all ages welcome

Come and support the competitors as their shoemaking skills are put to the test in the 2023 annual Farrier Competition. It’s always a fun and interesting day as we watch the sparks fly!

Did you know that it takes over 4 years to qualify to become a farrier? This thrilling event provides much entertainment as well as an insight into this fascinating and specialist trade.

The Competition:
The competition is organised by the Museum’s resident farrier, Gavin Moody and judged by Master Farrier, Stephen Britten, Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers and Approved Training Farrier.

The competition is split into heats between 1st and 2nd years, and 3rd and 4th years, with an open competition finishing off the day. You’ll also get the opportunity to watch the farriers and apprentices honing their skills as they attempt to make horseshoes in just 10 minutes in the forge!

NHRM are grateful to Stromsholm who are kindly providing all the steel on the day, and to Atlantic Equine for all their support.

If you’d like to take part in the competition, please contact Gavin on farriergavinmoody@yahoo.com for more information and entrance fees.
